I am a Strange Loop

Oh wow, I just finished Douglas Hofstadter’s “I am a Strange Loop” It took me a while to get through but it was well worth it. It’s probably one of the most insightful books I have ever read.

I thought for a while that when you are having a conversation with someone you are sharing parts of your unique world view with the other person. In a way, a blueprint of your ideas will then will live on in their mind and vice versa. By exchanging stories you will make the person and yourself a little bit more immortal because even after you die your stories will live on in the other person.

Hofstadter is describing a similar thing in his book. Each of us has their own strange loop that defines us. We also carry copies strange loops of other important people in our lives in us. When someone close to you dies, the copy of their strange loop is still in you and in other people.

Here is a video summing up the book

There is so much more wisdom in it. I can highly recommend reading it.
